In
Mourning
"Monolith"
(Pulverised Records)
Although formed 10 years ago, these Swedes first came to wider attention
with the release of their debut “Shrouded Divine”. Despite
their name, they aren't quite as depressing or melancholic as they sound,
probably more emo which suits their style of techno death actually very
well. Opting for a more mid tempo sound and a tad less brutality than
the rest of Sweden, In Mourning go instead for a far more sauve and catchy
sound, putting them more into Opeth or even Katatonia's territory. With
a fair amount of tranquil passages and a hint of prog style keyboards,
I found songs like 'The Poet And The Painter Of Souls', 'With You Came
Silence' and 'Pale Eye Revelation' demonstrating a high degree of accomplished
musicianship and songwriting. As such the compelling performance on “Monolith”
was beyond expectation and heralded the final eclipse of Swedish darkness!
