Brain Drill
"Quantum Catastrophe"
(Metal Blade)

These guys are aptly named. Taking US death metal to the next dimension by mixing it with extreme metal for an in your face experience that is nothing short of mind bending and savagely played, one must question how far the bar can yet be raised again before entering the dimension of pure musical chaos. However Brain Drill's style is tight and not without excellent musicianship (as well as a hearty stamina to drive the hyperspeed velocity of songs like 'Mercy To None') so they (just about) keep it together on the cusp of the event horizon. As screaming / growling vocalist Steve Rathjen explains, the concept behind Quantum Catastrophe is about '....Universal decimation, pandemic disease and zombie re-awakenings - mankind is entering an age of mass speculation as foreseen by numerous ancient cultures. We also know our planet has fulfilled these mass extinctions time and again centuries in the past. The question which remains, are we due for another apocalyptic transition?” Whatever the case, let's hope songs like 'Beyond Bludgeoned', 'Nemesis Of Neglect' and 'Entity Of Extinction' aren't some kinda self fulfilling musical prophecy heading us into oblivion!!

Braindrill
“Apocalyptic Feasting”
(Metal Blade)

When I first slipped this sucker on, it was so fast that I thought my CD player had busted! In fact, there was nothing wrong except that Braindrill have set the new record in speed metal (despite the tinny production) that has ranked them no 8 in the top 10 myspace grindcore bands and no 11 of death metal bands in the world. As with Slayer’s success, much can be attributed to the standout drumming of Marco Pitruzella’s (ex Vital Remains) rocket propelled feet judging by the velocity of the double bass on this 10 track debut. With guitarist Jeff Hughell’s equally frenetic fretboard cacophonoy, Braindrill’s extreme death metal is racing neck and neck with the likes of Job For A Cowboy on the perilous road to musical insanity - the question is whether anyone will survive it.
