Aarni If you liked the atmospheric experimentation of Fleurty, early Burzum and Mortiis then Finland’s Aarni is for you. Maybe. Aarni describe themselves as ‘Chthonic Hybrid Musick’. More accurately, “Bathos” is a mixture of styles from folk to ambient to raw guitar, coupled with hypno goth vocals and shamanic chants. Go figure. Still, it doesn’t come as any surprise given the influences from Michael Moorcock, Salavador Dali, HP Lovecraft etc. The only shocker is the credit to Rick Mayall and Ade Edmonson - c’mon guys! And the stupid questionnaire at the back that tells you to bury it in the woods, where one of Aarni’s agents will then locate it. Of course, how stupid of me ha ha. So, if you’re still reading this I can only hope you’re inspired (or crazy enough) to check “Bathos” out. I don’t want to be the only one staring at the walls... -Shan Siva
