A
Poetic Yesterday
"A Little South Of Zero"
(Rising Records)
Youthful APY from England (just check out the song titles for proof of
their eccentricity) are a mellower screamcore (well, vocalist Gav Stewart
does give it some) outfit that are thankfully more controlled their American
cousins and additionally offer some excellent balancing harmonies from
the rest of the band. The contrast works well, especially thanks to the
melodic, pensive riffs and licks of guitarists Matt Youl and Rich Marshall
like on the wittily titled 'Countdown To Catchphrase = Jeremy Kyle'. APY
offer further variety in the highly contrasting 'Tony Jaa Will Kick Your
Ass' where screamcore gives way to classical violins to acoustic guitar
before building back to the 'core. And is that a syndrum on the mellow
/ hard (at the same time) 'Thermite Plasma On Your Steel Supports'?!?!
Yeah, it's APY's mellower side that deffo works more for me than their
harder edged stuff and that's where in my opinion their true talent lies.
