Oh crikey, it's Lawnmower Deth!!!

Is Download gonna be a one off show and the last chance (or first for many I'm guessing) to see Lawnmower Deth or herald the start of a reformation (along with a new set of Flymo ads!)?

Not too sure yet what is happening we would love to do more gigs but it’s difficult with Kev being on tour with Bullet for my Valentine all the time he’s often out of the country, he’s in LA now recording the new Bullet album as we speak. We would like to do more festivals but probably next year now. We got to play in Holland quite a lot in the past but there are so many good festivals in Europe now that it would be nice to get over to France, Germany, Portugal etc....It also depends what we get offered. We get offered UK gigs all the time but have played many of the smaller venues in the past it probably seems arrogant but don’t feel the need to be driving around the country in transit vans to play small gig to 10 people in the middle of January, been there, done that. We are thinking of going on a stadium tour next year i.e. the O2 arena, Wembley Stadium, NEC, Millennium Stadium, etc.......We are trying to get over to the states too as we’ve never been there so watch this space as we are trying to sort out one of the most legendary gigs of all time with a New York band, one gig in NY and one gig in the UK. I want to get over to Ireland to play with Gama Bomb as we never got over there either.

Why have you decided to play after all these years?

We didn’t really decide to play or do anything we just got offered the Ally Pally gig back in November last year with Bullet and it just seemed to be the right thing to do and we enjoyed playing the old songs and seeing each other after 13 years, then Download came up and you must be mental to turn that down so it’s just carried on I guess. So we then decided that we needed a warm up to and hooked up with Virus and Metal Messiah who are also back together. Gamma Bomb are our new mates so it just all sort of came together. See you at Milton Keynes on 5th of June. If Bullet had not offered us the gig none of this would have happened so thanks to them for giving us the opportunity and a second chance.

Who's gonna be in the line-up from the original band?

All of us. Four of us were in the original band anyway, then we added Paddy and then Kev came in after Ohh Crikey. Paddy has been rehearsing with us as Kev is always away so we decided that it would be everyone who has ever been in the band. We’ve never chopped and changed band members as Lawnmower has always been about mates. 3 of us went to school together and it would not be the same without the original guys but if someone said no we’d respect that but I could not see us continuing with strangers as such in the band. I know that we all feel the same about this. We are not one of these bands that has fallouts and arguments.

From what I remember of the band at the time (along with Metal Duck and comix like Viz) I remember humour being a big part of the image (dare I use that word) so was that intentionally planned or for want or desire of a serious image?

The band was dreamt up around the same time as Anthrax, SOD, MOD, Acid Reign, Metal Duck, Spermbirds, Suicidal, the Hardons, the Stupids, DRI, Murphy’s Law, Screeching Weasels etc....who were all pretty similar to us and it just kind of happened. We never intended to write any serious songs, serious songs just sounded stupid to us we couldn’t do it, we are all jokers and don’t take any of it too seriously. We never wanted to take the piss out of metal as people have suggested as we are all big time metal, thrash, Death heads and have always been into the metal scene for years and years now. It’s about stupid things that make us laugh. We were looking at a Death Metal magazine the other day and wondered how some of these black metal bands can take themselves seriously we were pissing ourselves laughing but each to their own eh.

Was there any particular reason why you chose gardening equipment? I seem to remember the competition between Qualcast and Flymo at the time (I've used both btw) so was it the case of something that was readily identifiable?

No reason at all it was just ridiculous and appealed to us as there was plenty of material to be had about thrashing blades of hades, slashing strimmers, mutilating mowers, rampaging hedge strimmers, Mower Liberation Front, etc....it just snowballed.

At the time there were lots of bands (and I use that word loosely) cashing in on the thrash wave and a lotta people (and I confess myself too) couldn't actually decide if LD were a joke band or for real - especially as many of the band's best songs were in fact covers - so can you set the record straight?

I would say that we were not a joke band we just used in the loosest term a bit of humour, as long as it made us laugh we went for it. Joke band are like Bad News and Spinal Tap but we thought that they were funny too, the comic strip parodies were superb and Tap is a classic.

Bernard Doe (Metal Forces) certainly didn't like you very much did he?! Mind you, he didn't like Hellhammer either and had to eat humble pie with Celtic Frost ha ha!

He just didn’t get it, he thought that we were taking the piss out of metal but that was not the case at all but he wouldn’t have it. As you say it just shows how wrong he was as Hellhammer were truly awesome.

Ironically when you decided to get serious with 'Billy' it all went pear shaped or was it just by then the humour was wearing thin?

We just wanted to do something a bit different that was all when it came to Billy we just got a bit fed up with playing what we had been playing for a number of years and the band reached a natural conclusion, we’d had enough of rehearsing 3 times a week for 8 or 9 years and gigging at that particular time and wanted to do different things. If we had tried to do 5 or 6 ohh Crikeys it would have been shit and that is why Crikey is a classic and always will be we still love it as many people do. Out set for Download is all Crikey tunes as we want to play that stuff and it is what people remember us for and want to hear.

What do you all you guys do nowadays post LD? Back to B&Q....?

We are all quite dull and have professional jobs and some of us have families apart from Kev that is who is still out there.

Qualcast vs Flymo - who would win? Gotta admit, everytime I see programs like 'Robot Wars' I do think of LD!

Flymo would win every time as he’s a professional wrestler in the WWF!!!!!
