.a life once lost

With a sound reflective of the city which they come from (and it ain't brotherly love we're talking here) Philadelphia's A Life Once Lost have mauled their way outta the gutter to become one of the real new kids on the block. Keepin' it street gettin the word from vocalist Bob Meadows.

Ok, easy question to begin with Bob - how did you guys arrive at the name ALOL and what does it mean?

BELIEVE A FRIEND SUGGESTED IT - HE ACTUALLY PLAYS GUITAR IN THE PHILADELPHIA DOOM PUNK BAND TOWERS. IT KIND OF STUCK AND THAT WAS A WRAP. NO ONE EVER REALLY HAD A CLUE WHAT IT MEANT WHEN SO I COINED IT AS A SECOND CHANCE AT SOMETHING IMPORTANT.

I gotta say I'm really impressed by the quality of the songs on 'Iron Gag' - not only are they heavy as fuck but they're catchy and well structured so is this reflective of how much time and effort you guys out into the music - or are you just naturally gifted ha ha!

A LITTLE OF BOTH I GUESS! WE TAKE OUR TIME - WE DON'T USE EVERY RIFF THAT COMES ABOUT - WE HAVE A LOT OF PRIDE IN WHO WE ARE AND HOW THESE SONGS SOUND SO WE DON'T MIND TAKING OUR TIME.

What was it like working with Randy Blythe - was he like Captain Blythe (they're probably related y'know) from 'Mutiny On The Bounty' (picturing scenes where he's screaming 'c'mon you motherfuckerz' ha ha)

RANDY IS A GOOD DUDE AND AN AMAZING VOCALIST. HAVING HIM COME IN AND FINE TUNE WHAT I CREATED WAS PRETTY GNARLY.

I've passed thru Camden and northern Philly and they've gotta be some of the scariest lookin places I've ever seen (not that that's necessarily reflective of the people cos I grew up in tenements and people were decent and honest)...so has coming from Philly influenced you in any way (I'm guessing you're not rich kids either)?

NO ONE US ARE RICH - ALL OF OUR PARENTS HAVE WORKED THEIR ASSES OFF TO MAKE SURE WE WERE COMFORTABLE AND HAPPY WHILE GROWING UP. THE STREETS DO MAKE YOU TOUGHER BUT THEY ALSO MAKE YOU A LITTLE SMARTER - YOU CAN SEE THROUGH PEOPLE'S BULLSHIT - NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

I lot've bands don't like touring but you guys have done the milege so was it the case of 'having to' or 'wanting to' - touring can be a funny business where some bands do it to fulfill contracts whilst others do it cos that's the life that they want and others yet again do it cos its the only way to succeed so I'm just trying to get a take on what it means in respect of you guys.

WE TOUR BECAUSE WE WANT TO - BOTTOM LINE.

Speaking of tours, you've certainly landed some high profile ones with Ozzfest and the Jagermeister ones so how did you bag those? Good management, connections....?

MANAGEMENT, AGENTS, RECORD LABELS - THEY ALL HAVE THEIR HANDS IN GETTING US SOMEWHERE AND LANDING THIS HIGHER PROFILE TOURS.

So where do you see it all heading to Bob? I'm not sure if this kind of Extreme metal has limits - not in terms of musicianship or the music itself per se - but in terms of its mainstream appeal so can you see yourselves playing arenas one day?

DON'T KNOW MAN. I WAS BORN IN THE PUNK D.I.Y. SCENE IN PHILADELPHIA AND THAT IS WHERE I WILL DIE.
